Know today that God doesn’t provide inferior gifts. The third servant was paralyzed by fear. What might happen, if I risk and lose? It didn’t matter that the others had risked everything. It was his refusal to risk anything, his refusal to risk investing the marvelous talents that had been given him that, finally, brought about the master’s condemnation.

Even Lutherans, who are regularly reminded that we cannot be saved by our works, still wonder whether we have been good enough to enter into the kingdom of heaven. The answer is “no! we have not been good enough and we will never be good enough.” But, still, I will see you there (if I can ever divert my eyes away from the glorious majesty of God long enough to notice you). You will be robed in white, pure, not because of your own goodness, but because of the blood of the Lamb, shed for you and for me, on the altar of Calvary.
